BC RADAR provides the roadmap to individual athlete development. It is a series of tools that take a multi-layered look at an athlete and their development. Rowing BC and the Provincial Rowing Academy use these tools to create an integrated pathway for athlete development.

The systematic approach supports talented athletes, coaches and clubs to develop from a grassroots level to the National Team. BC RADAR also allows Rowing BC to compare athletes from across the province to the same standard. BC RADAR Provides:

  • Entry Point to the Academy
  • Tools to measure improvement, support coaches in the delivery of their programs
  • Tools that guide and move athletes from one service level to the next.
  • Road Map to Provincial and national Teams.

BC RADAR Tools

Tool #1: Talent Identification and Detection - TID

The TID tool provides information on the potential of the athletes to perform at an elite level.

  • Allow athletes to be targeted to the appropriate stream within a club or provincial program.
  • Identify athletes that are currently not involved in rowing, and direct them to the sport based on a TID score.
  • Monitors athletes who are new to the sport, or are not ready to participate in the Talent Development and Monitoring Tool (TD&M)

Tool #2: Talent Development and Monitoring - TD&M

There are three areas that are essential to ensure increased performance as athletes develop.

  1. Physiology - building a rowing specific engine
  2. Skill - Ability to move the boat effectively
  3. Performance - Putting it all together

Talent Development and Monitoring Protocols

How Does it Work

Talent Development - By looking at the athlete with a multi layered approach the athlete's strength and weaknesses can be identified. This becomes very clear and transparent for both the coach and the athlete. By maintaining an athlete's strength and targeting their weaknesses an athlete can develop to the next level.

Talent Monitoring - Much the same as a development, a coach can look at how an athletes assessment changes over time. An improved RADAR score reflects athlete improvement.

Scoring system: Each area in the Talent Development and Monitoring Tool is assigned a specific score. By achieving a certain standard for each identified skill the athlete accumulates points. The total score is determined and compared to the score needed for each Academy / IPS level.

BC RADAR testing score sheets

Once complete the results can be used as a developmental report card for the athlete and the coaches working with the individual. The score is also used to assign athletes a level in the Provincial Rowing Academy.

Deadlines for Submitting BC RADAR Scores
