Masters Committee

Masters’ rowers often are the backbone of a rowing club, providing continuity of club administration, leadership, and infrastructure in support of youth programs.  A strong masters program is a powerful resource for any club as well as an agent for ongoing personal development and healthy living for adults.  In this context, Rowing BC has created a Masters’ Committee.  The members are:

Michael Clark - Chair
Cinda Ewton - RBC Vice-President, Domestic Development
Chuck McDairmid - RBC Technical Director
Jane McCall - Delta Deas Rowing Club
Andrew Ling - Vancouver Rowing Club
Shelley Fletcher - Nicomekl Rowing Club
Leslie Uhlenbruck - Deep Cove Rowing Club
Linda Milne - Maple Bay Rowing Club

This committee has a broad representation of masters’ rowers and is dedicated to building community, strengthening the sport as it pertains to adult rowing, and encouraging club growth by attracting new participants.  The value system of this committee is focused on supporting opportunities for people who are in the process of creating what they want.

  • Are clear about their goals and take action towards them.
  • Take responsibility and are accountable for their actions.
  • Are generous in spirit and share their knowledge and experience.
  • Are coach-able, always eager to learn, always willing to teach.
  • Find solutions, not assign blame.
  • Acknowledge and are inspired by the success of others.
  • Know the value of support, open to receiving it and generous in giving it.
  • Are team players and build community.
  • Are good hosts and guests.
  • Put their hearts on the line and strive for excellence.
  • Lead by example.

Actions:

A.   On November 21, 2009, a Masters Forum was held in Richmond.  There was as strong representation with approximately 30 people participating.  A long list of action items was created then consolidated into four priorities felt to be the most important to address.  They are:

1.   Communications:
Recommendations include a Masters’ Section on the RBC website, a more complete regatta schedule including regattas in the Seattle area, a bulletin board mechanism to aid in interclub communication and weekly training tips.  Christine Eastgaard generously agreed to help with the website work.

2.  Inter-club training camps:
The Interior Rowing Series was put forward as a model.

3.  Masters’ coach development opportunities – encourage more masters coaches.

4.  An annual B.C. masters regatta.  Planning has already started.

B.   The Committee is enthusiastic about what is ahead and will be keeping rowers up to date via this website as programs and activities progress.
